Staten Island mom accused of beating daughter with chair
    by Staten Island Advance
    Tuesday January 27, 2009, 2:50 PM

A mom from Staten Island’s New Brighton community used a wooden chair to beat her 12-year-old daughter so badly, police allege, that the young girl was bleeding and her eye was swollen shut.

Police arrested Belinda Scott, 37, on felony assault and other charges after they responded to a call from one of Ms. Scott’s friends that the girl had been injured, a law enforcement source said.

When officers arrived at her apartment on the 300-block of Jersey Street Sunday night, Ms. Scott refused to answer the door, prompting the police to call the FDNY in to force open the door for them, authorities said.

Inside, police found the girl bloody and battered, wrapped in a towel, with bite marks on her ears and cuts on her arms and back, authorities said.

They also found a smashed-up wooden chair with blood on it at the top of the stairs leading up to Ms. Scott’s apartment.

The girl, who had not reported to school since November, had old wounds as well, the source said.

Police believe Ms. Scott administered the beating sometime between 8 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.

Ms. Scott told investigators that the girl got her injuries because she had been jumped by a group of youths in another neighborhood.

“We don’t believe that is credible at this point,” the law enforcement source said.

Both the 12-year-old girl and an 8-year-old brother, who was home but uninjured when police arrived, were taken into the care of the city Administration for Child Services.

A source said ACS was already investigating the household before the incident, but didn’t have additional details.

Ms. Scott was charged with second-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree harassment, according to William J. Smith, a spokesman for District Attorney Daniel Donovan.

She’s scheduled to be arraigned in Stapleton Criminal Court this afternoon.

    Hi everyone,

Sadly another murdered child. Thank you Roxy for bringing this sad story to our attention. This young girl was kept like an animal, she was caged to her bedroom, literally caged and locked. She was beaten and starved each day, forced to wear diapers at the age of 7 because she was not allowed to go to the bathroom. And she was tied to a lawn chair and beaten all the time…..SOUND like another murdered child? Our Nixzmary.

This is disgusting and this is why we all must pass THE NIXZMARY BROWN LAW NATIONWIDE.

    * Jury Sees Graphic Details of Girl’s Abuse

GONZALES, Texas (AP) – On Thursday, the trial of a couple for the death of their adopted daughter continues.

Chrystal Ramirez’s 1st grade teacher told jurors she reported the girl’s condition to child welfare authorities. The teacher says she was concerned because the girl had been stealing food, losing weight, and had bruises on her face.

Later, Ramirez’s step-sister said she didn’t notice anything unusual when she visited the home.

Prosecutors say Chrystal Ramirez was starved to death by her adoptive parents.

The jury also heard from a state caseworker who said the 8-year-old girl got food by stealing from classmates and eating out of trash cans.

Ruben and Bettie Ramirez are on trial in Gonzales for murder in the 2007 death of their adopted daughter Chrystal Ramirez. A medical examiner testified Wednesday that the girl weight 45 pounds at death and could have died from malnutrition, blunt force trauma to the head or both.

The parents have both pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Kim Richter is an investigations supervisor with Child Protective Services. She’s told a Gonzales County jury that Crystal’s is “the most serious case of child abuse I’ve seen in my 11 years with the agency.”

    Thanks Rosey,
Yes, unfortunately another horriffic child abuse similar to Nixzmary Brown. I am so distraught at the details of how this poor child was tortured by both parents! The graphic pictures of her bruised emaciated body remind me of how our dear Nixzmary suffered. She was duct taped and tied to a lawn chair with a bycycle lock. She was starved. Her room had a door with a rope tied on it with a bell hanging, so that she couldn’t escape. She was beat repeatedly with a cane. Oh, my God, I wish I could have known her and loved her like I love my own 9 yr. old daughter. This breaks my heart.

I do believe that in this case the story is all too familiar…CPS failled her just as CPS has failled so many! The so called parents had control and did all they wanted to torture and kill this innocent child! The teacher did right in reporting the incident. I can only imagine the guilt that this teacher must feel, but she did what she could. Now the case resumes this week. I hope these animals suffer untimate hell on earth! When will all these crimes against children end???

  23. Rosey says:

    Roxy,

Thank you so much for the information about our baby Crystal. I am sickened by it and sick of how this kind of abuse still goes on.

  24. roxy says:

Well, today a verdict was reached in the case of Crystal Ramirez.

GONZALES -Steve and Bettie Ramirez were sentenced to the maximum punishment Monday after a jury found them guilty of murder and injury to a child in the death of their adopted daughter Crystal Ramirez in August 2007 and the injury of another adopted daughter.

Crystal was 8 when she died and her sister was 10 at the time.

Both were sentenced to life in prison for the murder charge and 99 years in prison for the injury to a child charge causing serious bodily injury.

Bettie, 59, was also found guilty of a third charge of injury to a child causing bodily and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, the maximum allowed for that third degree felony.

    Steve Ramirez is 66.

They were also assessed $10,000 fines with each of the prison sentences.

The jury found them guilty after deliberating more than two hours Monday afternoon. It took the jury less time to assess the punishment.

  25. Rosey says:

    Roxy,

Great news that both animals received life in prison with no chance of parole, plus additional time. JUSTICE SERVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sadly, though Crystal is not with us, but at least she is smiling down at the jurors. It’s great to hear about competent jurors, since jurors for both Cesar and Nixzaliz’s trial FAILED MISERABLY.

Thank you so much Roxy. RIP sweet baby Crystal Ramirez. Roxy, when I saw the pictures of the animals parents, I could not believe it as the animal parents looked so frail and old. Coward bullies!!!

Love to Crystal. Crystal, play with baby Nixzmary, Elisa, Kyle, Sean, Ginelis, Lisa, Hailey, and so on and so on and so on.

New Cassel mom pleads insanity in 3 kids’ deaths Leatrice Brewer will be sent to secure psychiatric facility

    BY ANN GIVENS | ann.givens@newsday.com
    7:35 PM EST, February 9, 2009

Leatrice Brewer nodded almost imperceptibly when the judge asked her whether she killed her 18-month-old son.

    “Yes,” she whispered.

“Take a deep breath and keep going,” Nassau County Judge Meryl Berkowitz said, before asking Brewer about the other two children she drowned last February in her bathtub: her daughter, 6, and son, 5. She answered “yes” to questions about them, too.

Brewer Monday pleaded not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect, and will now be sent to a secure upstate psychiatric facility indefinitely, prosecutors said. Brewer, prosecutors and Berkowitz all agreed to the plea after two independent psychiatric evaluations showed that at the time she killed the three children, she didn’t know that what she was doing was wrong.

“My granddaughter loved her children,” said Brewer’s grandmother Maebell Mickens outside the Mineola courtroom. “I feel she’s getting ready to get the help she needs.”

The deaths of Jewell Ward, 6, Michael Demesyeux, 5, and Innocent Demesyeux, 18 months, drew attention to Nassau’s social services agency after investigators learned that caseworkers had gone to Brewer’s apartment two days earlier but left when no one was home. They did not schedule a follow-up visit until after the children were dead.

Innocent Demesyeux, the father of the two youngest children, said before the court proceeding that he was disappointed that prosecutors accepted Brewer’s insanity plea.

“If there’s no trial, I will never know what happened to my children,” Demesyeux said. Demesyeux’s lawyer, Sanford Pirotin of Westbury, said Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice may have avoided a trial so that any errors made by the county would not be aired in court, a charge Rice’s office vigorously denied.

Outside court, Mitch Benson, head of Rice’s major offense bureau, said the only reason for the plea was that “she didn’t appreciate the wrongfulness of her conduct.”

In court, prosecutor Michael Canty said when police arrived at Brewer’s home Feb. 24, she told officers, “I jumped out the window and I killed my kids.”

Later, Brewer told detectives that around 4 a.m. she woke up her daughter Jewell, and told her it was “time to go,” Canty said. She then got a knife, slit her daughter’s throat and put her back in bed. She next drowned her infant, Innocent, in the bathroom tub and put him in the bed beside Jewell.

She then noticed that Jewell was still alive, and drowned her in the tub, Canty said.

Finally she took her middle child, Michael, to the bathroom and drowned him, Canty said.

Brewer said she then swallowed a combination of bleach, Windex, OxiClean and a bottle of aspirin and lay down in bed with her children, hoping she would die, Canty said.

When she woke up the next morning, she tried again to kill herself, this time by jumping out the second-story window of her apartment. When she survived, Canty said she went back upstairs to her neighbor’s apartment, called 911 and confessed to killing her children.

According to the psychiatric evaluations, Brewer suffered from “major depressive disorder,” including hallucinations and paranoia. The reports say that Brewer understood that she was killing her children, but believed at the time that she was saving them and herself from the effects of voodoo.

    Jackie,

Thank you so much for sharing this sad story. I remember this true life murdering spree. I ask why??? Why?

People, before you have children with your boyfriend or girlfriend, really know what you are doing by seriously learning about that person you are about to share a child with, and that takes years, not days or months, but years. Or better yet, close your legs or use contraceptives until you are happily married to a just and kind person.

    Rosey
    Nixzmary Brown Soldier

  29. roxy says:

Rosey and Jackie, thanks so much for being faraway friends that I can share my pain and anger with! Yes, Justice has been served for baby Crystal! I just wish they could have gotten the death penalty! I still believe that they have no right to live!
Jackie, you asked about the other siblings. yes, Crystal’s 10 yr old sister, cassandra was abused in the same ways but she was able to tell their story because her baby sister did not survive. Crystal’s death was Cassandra’s salvation. As far as the brother, I believe he was about 6 yrs and from what I understand he was always seen with the so called parents. He was healthy and well fed. It is obvious that the girls were singled out.

Rosey this website is beautiful and I will pass the word about how successful things have been. And to think that this all started from our baby Nixzmary…..
    Love,
    Roxy

  30. roxy says:

Good morning Rosey, Jackie, and all of Nixzmary Brown’s Soldiers,
I would like to share with you about something that I read in todays news.

Crystal’s birth mother, Teresa Camarillo, said the verdict and the sentence carried a meaningful message.

“This is not just for my daughter, but for all the kids that are suffering and where nobody’s talking. Things need to be done for kids that are being abused like this. There needs to be some kind of law that says they have to stay in school when they are in the system,” she said. “It was God’s will that everything came out the way it did.”

This is very true. Many times, as in Nixzmary’s case, abusive parents will keep children from school, or homeschool them. This is a controling way to continue the abuse. I wonder how many children would be saved if there was follow up visits possibly from a school source. Is there a law saying that these children have to remain in school? I work as a substitute teacher and I am a yr away from graduation and teaching 4-8 grade, and I have vowed to stay aware and protect my children. As a teacher in Texas we are required to report any suspected child abuse. I don’t think that is enough, because many parents will retaliate and not send their children to school. Something must be done to continuously monitor these children if abuse is suspected. Other measures must be taken, because it is in the schools were we learn so much about what is bothering our children. We can’t depend on CPS. It is obvious that they have failed too many children!! Schools have to get involved! I know I will!

    Roxy

  31. pattie says:

Roxy, thank you for sharing. I agree with you.Schools try to do the right thing by these poor children but it’s not enough. Teachers are not given enough power to help the children that they suspect is being abused, after all our children spend the better part of the day with them. They see the abuse most times before some family and friends.

I am sure you are a wonderful teacher. God bless you! The more people that become aware of the unspeakable things that are happening to these beautiful children the the faster our law gets passed..

It makes me so angry to know that they make it so difficult for the most loving people to adopt children and then i read about these monsters doing something so vile to children that where placed in their care.
It is so expensive to adopt. I wonder where they got the money to adopt both Crystal and her sister.

There is something so wrong with the laws in our country!

    Have a great day everyone!
    Love,
    Pattie

  35. Rosey says:

    Pattie,

I totally concur. Clearly the Anthony’s strategically planned Caylee’s memorial as a tool to reach out to their daughter and to their daughter’s defense. (CMA, write a letter to Casey, my daughter has compassion and is not at fault)

It was a moving, heartfelt and beautiful memorial…it really was, but each member should have left a small place for Casey in their speech (or not at all), afterall, this memorial is because Casey murdered Caylee.

    AMBER ALERT:

SATSUMA, Fla. – Sheriff’s deputies searched house-to-house Wednesday and dive teams searched the St. Johns River for a 5-year-old north Florida girl who went missing from her bed.

A Florida Amber Alert was issued for Haleigh Cummings of Satsuma, about 70 miles north of Orlando. The girl was last seen Monday night when she went to bed.

Investigators with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said it was not clear if Haleigh was abducted or wandered out into the rural neighborhood that borders the river. They said the mobile home where she lives had no signs of forced entry, but a back door was open.

Haleigh’s father told investigators the blond girl was missing when he returned home from work around 3 a.m. Tuesday. Ronald Cummings said his girlfriend was awake and frantic that Haleigh was missing from her bed.

“I just got home from work and my 5-year-old daughter is gone,” Ronald Cummings told a dispatcher on a 911 call. “If I find whoever has my daughter before you all do, I’m killing them. I don’t care if I spend the rest of my life in prison.

    Mass search
Officers from local, state and federal agencies and K-9 teams scoured the neighborhood. Check points were set up at the entrance to the neighborhood to search departing vehicles. Two dive teams explored the St. Johns River. Neighbors and family members also were being interviewed by detectives.

The girl’s disappearance has not been classified as an abduction, although detectives were treating it as one to cover all their bases, said Lt. Johnny Greenwood, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

“We’re currently working both angles — did she wander off, we’re working it that way with the searches,” Greenwood said. “And investigators are doing interviews in case it is an abduction.

    Ladies,

More children dying in New York. We wll have to wait for more details to come.

NEW YORK — New York Police have arrested a grandmother in connection with the death of a four-year-old boy in the Bronx.

Police were called to a home Saturday where they found four-year-old Kevion Shand unconscious and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene and the Medical Examiner’s office is to determine the exact cause of death.

Police later arrested the boy’s grandmother, 45-year-old Angela Barksdale. She was charged with assault.

Meanwhile, police are investigating the death of another boy found dead in his Bronx bed.

Police say there were no signs of trauma on the body of 9-year-old Derrick Peralta, and the city medical examiner will work to determine how he died. Police were called to his apartment Saturday morning after his father discovered the boy was unresponsive.

The child was brought to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was declared dead.

Hi there. I live in MA and I will try to make it to NY. Please keep me up to date with all of the information about the march!

  46. Ciara says:

Have you all heard about Christopher and Ariana Payne.
Their murderers just went on trial.
    Their story is absolutely heartbreaking.

  47. Rosey says:

Ciara, yes we have heard of angel Ariana and Christopher. I hope the biological mother sues ACS and commands justice to the failed system. Plus the father and step mother should DIE in jail. To this day, correct me if I am wrong, Christopher’s body was never found.

Ariana, was found dead in a cold, abadoned, lock closet. She had over 7 rips broken, broken shoulder, bruises and cuts all over her beautiful face and body, plus she was starved. The father lost custody years prior and should have NEVER been given the option to see these children. It’s so sad how our system fails our children and miserably it fails our children.

Our page “ACS/CPS Wall of Shame” is dedicated to the children who were murdered while under the systems “care”. Ariana and Christopher are on it.

Ciara, great speaking with you again and please continue to blog. Also, I do hope to see you on April 26.

    Love to you,

Just when I thought I heard it all: This disgusting so called “Mother”, personally speaking there is a second word missing after “Mother”. Please read:

Louisiana Woman, Couple Charged With Swapping Two Kids for Pet Bird, Cash

NEW ORLEANS — A Louisiana woman is accused of trading two young children in her care for a pet cockatoo and $175 cash from a couple who had been trying for years to have their own child, authorities said Thursday.

Donna Greenwell, 53, a long-haul trucker with an arrest record from Pitkin, is charged with aggravated kidnapping, along with would-be adoptive parents Paul J. Romero, 46, and Brandy Lynn Romero, 27, of Evangeline Parish.

“The Romeros had good intentions from what we see,” said Keith Dupre, a detective with the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office. “They really wanted to take care of the kids. The kids were well-dressed and seemed to be treated good by the Romero family.”

The transaction for the 5-year-old boy and the 4-year-old girl was negotiated by phone after Greenwell spotted a flier posted at a livestock barn selling a cockatoo for $1,500 and called the Romeros on Feb. 18, Dupre said.

Although Paul Romero had three children from a previous marriage, Dupre said, he and Brandy had tried unsuccessfully for years to have a child together.

When they told that to Greenwell, she allegedly offered to hand over the boy and girl for about $2,000. When the Romeros said they couldn’t meet the price, Dupre said, “Ms. Greenwell agreed to make an even trade: the bird for the kids.”

Greenwell showed up with the children at the Romeros’ home the next day and said she would also need $175 for an attorney to complete adoption paperwork, Dupre said. But she had no authority to put the children up for adoption.

Everything began to unravel last week when authorities received a phone tip that the Romeros and the children would be at a local fast food restaurant, where authorities approached them. The children are in state custody.

Authorities believe Greenwell began caring for the children about a year ago at the mother’s request.

The detective said Greenwell “stated that the mother was having a hard time and asked her to baby sit. She said one month led to two months and two months led to a year.”

The children’s father, of Leesville, was questioned and has expressed interest in getting custody of the children. The mother is believed to be in Texas but told investigators through a relative that she plans to come to Evangeline Parish soon. The state would decide whether the parents can visit or gain custody of the children.

Authorities are checking a claim made by the children to one police officer that they were sexually and physically abused, although not by Greenwell or the Romeros.

The Romeros were free on $5,000 bond. Greenwell — described as a long-haul trucker with an extensive arrest record including charges of kidnapping, assault and theft — remained in jail on $100,000 bond, Dupre said. She turned herself in on Sunday.

The court clerk’s office said Thursday that attorneys had been appointed for Greenwell and Paul Romero. Greenwell’s court-appointed lawyer, Timmy Fontenot of Mamou, declined comment. A message was left Thursday afternoon for Romero’s lawyer, Kelly Tate.

Police in Glenmora, near where Greenwell lives, are seeking information from anyone who might know if Greenwell has sold other children.

“She’s had numerous children living with her at various times over the years,” said Officer Jennifer Potter, who received the anonymous telephone tip that eventually led to the arrests.

How disgusting…what a piece of crap. These people, Greenwell and the Romero’s should die in prison. And the useless judge granted only $5,000 bail for the Romeros’. When the heck are OUR children going to be taken seriously?????????????

Hello All, I am so saddened by all of the blogs I have read here today. It is so easy for people to live their lives with closed eyes to what could be happening to children in their communties. “Out of sight out of mind” mentality. I believe that each child is a gift from God and deserves to be nurtured and cared for and loved. The Monsters who perform these horrific acts must be brought to justice. The harshest sentences that the law can lay down every time. I am thankful to Rosey for bringing this cause to my attention and look forward to doing my part in the fight against Child Abuse. Rest In Peace fallen Angels, and be with God all who are abused today………. Karen
